Ports: Apapa Local Govt to Erect Road Barriers over Menace of Trucks

*As stakeholders blame operators of causing congestion to collect more demurrage
The Apapa Local Government Area, LGA, has said it will erect barriers on some of the inner roads in Apapa to check the menace of trucks that are causing gridlock.
The Council said this during a stakeholders’ meeting on how to address the issue of traffic logjam in Apapa.
The Chairman of the council, Elijah Adele said at least 15 areas will be involved in the erection of the barriers on inner roads in Apapa.
He said this will stop big trucks from plying such roads.
Adele said, “We will commence the erection of barriers which will kick off next week because some people have sold their conscience and now working against plans to find solution to the problem.”
Some stakeholders who attended the meeting also blamed some shipping lines as also causing the traffic problem in Apapa.
According to the stakeholders, the shipping lines were creating bottlenecks in the loading of containers in the ports so as to create room for more demurrage where they will make more money.
A Trustee of Shippers Association Lagos state chapter, Mr. Nicodamus Udolo, accused service providers of frustrating every effort made to fast-track smooth loading of containers and trailers at the ports.
Udolo said this was purely economic sabotage on the part of some operators.
He said, “for that reason alone people who have businesses in and around the Apapa ports, lose several millions of naira daily due to the recurring traffic bottlenecks.”
