Ijaw Leaders Move Against Avengers, to Protect Oil Installations

Leaders of host communities in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri, Delta State, have vowed to work against the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) who have been threatening to carry out attacks on oil installations if the federal government failed to fulfill its promise on the development of the region.
In a statement Monday, chairman of the 15 host communities said vigilantes have been put in place to monitor the activities of the Avengers.
The vigilantes are also to provide security on oil installations in their areas to ensure that they are not attacked by the Avengers.
Chairman of all communities chairmen, Johnbull Izirimi Demebi in the statement explained that the decision was taken to protect their areas against attacks by the Avengers.
He said that such attacks attract military presence in the communities with the people suffering a lot of trauma.
It would be recalled that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, had deployed additional 20 gunboats and fighter jets to Delta creeks to protect oil installations following the threat by Avengers.
Commenting on this development, Demebi appealed to the federal government to relax on the military option.
He said, “Our people are not criminals and we are not at war with the government. We don’t know who the members of the Avengers are, and we have demanded that they stay away from our land, as we are prepared to protect the oil facilities that pass through our community with everything we have.
“We have put in place our own internal security network to monitor oil facilities in our areas and we will not hesitate to arrest any vandal or criminals that come to our community to commit any act of sabotage on oil facilities on our land and hand them over to the security agents for prosecution”.
