The federal government is not happy with trawler owners over allegation that they are operating without transparency in their fishing activities on Nigerian waters.
The Senior Special Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture on Media, Dr. Kayode Oyeleye, accused the trawler owners of lack of accountability in their operations.
Oyeleye who spoke to members of the Nigerian Association of Agriculture Journalists (NAAJ) said the fact that the trawler owners were not transparent has made it difficult for the federal government to come to their aid.
According to him, the operations of the trawler owners were not helping economic growth in the country.
He however assured that government will not abandon those of them doing the right thing.
He told newsmen, “Basically issues affecting trawler operations is not peculiar to Nigeria alone but we are aware that there are illegal operations going on in our territorial water.
“Those of them who are doing things right need to come forward, form a strong front and engage the government so that government can also help them”
Oyeleye accused the trawler owners of not making the correct declaration of their actual catches while at sea, adding that government was aware of this .
He described such practices as clear economic sabotage, saying that the crew on board were always selling what they catch at sea only to declare to their offices that hunting has been very low.
He said that the trawler owners and the crew have to be transparent for government to show interest in assisting the industry.
